If you are truly serious about getting in the best shape you possibly can, revealing those abs of yours, building muscle, etc. then there is something you should truly try to avoid as much as possible if not completely: ALCOHOL.

Alcohol will not only make you fat, but it inhibits our ability to gain muscle as well. If  you are trying to get into shape, these two thing are not something you want, obviously. If you are a regular drinker, let’s say a beer a day, and you were to not exercise but instead just stop drinking alcohol all together, you could expect to lose between 15 and 20 pounds in a year! Now think of what you could do if you added exercise and healthy eating on top of that! The main problem with alcohol is that it provides us EMPTY CALORIES (defined here). Limiting these empty calories is very important to avoiding weight gain as well as replacing those calories with beneficial ones that will help us gain muscle (like what is in a chicken breast or veggies).

So next time you go for a casual drink, think about what you are doing to your body and reconsider. If you are one of those social drinkers and do not want to stop altogether, try taking a few weeks off at a time. You won’t feel nearly as bad when you do go out and have some drinks as you would if you did it on a regular basis, and it will help your fitness a lot more.
